On Sunday, an Islamabad court granted Ayaz Amir one day’s physical remand, after his 22-year-old daughter-in-law was found murdered in her home. The journalist, 37, was arrested after his daughter-in-law Sara Bibi was discovered murdered in her house. According to sources, the clashes between Sara and her husband Shahnawaz, 37, on Thursday night resulted in her death.
Shahnawaz is suspected of having murdered her by hitting her in the head with an iron dumbbell. The slain woman’s body was then placed in a bathtub, reports say. Shahzad Town Police Station had initially arrested the suspect and brought him to the station for further interrogation.
Following Shahnawaz’s interrogation, on Saturday, the police obtained an arrest warrant from Shahzad Town’s magistrate. The suspect had allegedly been arrested by Shahzad Town Police on Friday night and taken to Shahzad Town Police Station for further investigation.
The senior journalist was brought before a local magistrate today and pleaded that he had informed the police of the murder. Amir said he was the one who had provided the farmhouse address to the police station supervisor (SHO). His counsel, Nasir Asghar, added that Amir was “not named in the case” and there was no evidence to support his arrest.
“I was the only one who alerted the police about the murder,” Amir said. The police requested a four-day physical remand for the suspect “in order to investigate Ayaz Amir”. The case was deemed to be a “very significant one” by the police, as it involved the murder of a Canadian-born Pakistani woman. The court granted the police’s request and sent the accused to the officials for a one-day physical remand.
