Every living thing is made of water Al-Quran (21:30)
Water, a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen is one of the main components of our lives that is not only essential for the reproduction of living beings but also required for their growth, their proper body functioning. It is one of the important ingredients without which life would cease. Water is not just a vital compound for living beings it is also necessary for our daily activities of cleaning, washing, and drinking. A huge portion of 71 of the earth is covered with water while land covers only 29%. Infect, we need water from our birth, from dawn to dusk, from life to death, from cleaning to washing.
22nd March is celebrated as World International Water Day. The main purpose of this day is to signify the importance of water in our lives and the use of clean water for humans. Since 1991, it is being celebrated as International Day.
We’re seeing a fall in groundwater levels in recent years which is alarming. For many years, surface water is being polluted due to massive industrialization and other human activities.
We waste a lot of water while using. Just imagine the waste we cause during brushing our teeth. This is just one depiction of how we waste water. According to a survey conducted by Agha Khan University, waste of one drop of water from the tap results in loss of 4.3 liters of water per day, 130 liters monthly, and 1560 liters annually. Just imagine this waste from many thousand nulls and think how much water is being wasted worldwide.
Due to massive industrialization, the contaminated water of factories and other commercial hubs that contains heavy metals, are drained into lakes, rivers, etc. without filtration. And it not only contaminates the water of lakes but is also a danger to aquatic life. Water boring machines are excessively used to pollute the groundwater. contaminated, smelled water is being used for boring and it continuously pores in the boring hole. This pollutes the groundwater which we use for drinking. This water when used for drinking causes hepatitis and other water-borne diseases.
Due to the population Explosion, water resources are under severe pressure. As the population is continuously increasing, and subsequently the need for water is also increasing. This mass population needs more food for more agricultural production and consequently, an excessive quantity of water is being used. Our irrigation, as well as agricultural system, is very outdated. The canals are open, without any covering that causes a lot of water evaporation. We must adopt technological advancement in agriculture. The canals must be undergrounded to reduce evaporation. Drip irrigation systems should be encouraged by the government to curtail the evaporation of water from lands.
We should take this thing seriously and awareness is needed at an individual as well as state-level about the use of water, use it carefully and efficiently. This requires civic sense among the individuals. Govt. should legislate to prevent water pollution and contamination. Before draining water in the rivers, lakes, it must be filtered from heavy metals. We should use filtered water for drinking purposes. We must use this commodity of life properly to save our lives and the lives of our future generations. Otherwise, uncleaned, contaminated water will be the fate of our future generations and its effects would be drastic.
