The purpose of travel and recreation is to provide peace of mind, an opportunity to commune with nature, and a temporary escape from the fatigue and worries of daily life; however, sometimes they can become a doomsday for a person.
The heartbreaking incident in Swat, in which several members of the same family, who had come from Sialkot, were swept away by a fast-moving stream of water, is not just an accident but the result of collective negligence and lack of awareness. And a moment from which the entire nation needs to learn.
According to eyewitnesses, the affected people were taking a walk after breakfast near a dry stream when a sudden torrent of water appeared due to two days of continuous rain in the mountains. Instead of retreating, they went near the water and continued to take videos and selfies, while relatives and others continued to warn of the danger.
However, the obsession with the few moments of video footage did not allow them to decide in time, and then suddenly the flow of water increased so much that within a few moments, the laughter turned into screams.
This incident has left many bitter questions, but the question is not just why those people went. The question is:
- Have we turned sightseeing and entertainment into a means of social media gratification?
- Isn’t it the responsibility of the local administration to put up warning signboards at such places?
- Shouldn’t the state have been prepared for such situations at all times and have also issued warnings in advance?
- The question is also whether, at the time of the accident, not a single helicopter was available? Which could have reached for immediate help?
- The Meteorological Department had already given a warning of possible floods, so why were the rescue agencies not ready?
This tragedy highlights another tragic aspect of the “selfie culture.” Today’s generation wants to capture every moment on camera, even if it means risking their lives to do so.
This is not the first time that such a tragedy has occurred at a tourist destination. This is not just the loss of one family, one individual; it is our collective failure. We are all to blame, to some extent, for our own negligence, indifference, and lax thinking. And above all, the system that only gives condolence statements after every accident, not action.
Until the government moves beyond mere paper statements, until awareness and caution become our motto, such mothers will continue to cry, such fathers will remain silent, and such bodies will continue to float in the water.
